Summary

By attending this CPD we will help you to develop skills using the CERN@school chip and handling the associated data so that you can undertake genuine particle physics research in your school to enthuse and inspire your students.

This event will inspire physics teachers using state of the art technology from CERN, through the CERN@school kit and access to data from the TimePix detectors.

CERN@school is a project based around the CERN@school kit and access to data from TimePix detectors.

Students and their teachers have developed wonderful ideas over the years, which drive the project forward and make sure that they contribute in new and exciting ways. Students have developed a detector using the TimePix chips which is in space, they are putting chips on ships through CERN@sea, they are using data from chips in the LHC tunnel at CERN, and using data from these chips on the International Space Station (ISS).

The CPD leader for this training day is Laura Thomas who has delivered a large number of workshops on the TimPix project all over the country.  She has also produced fantastic resources which will be available so that you can get started straight away after the training day with your students

Outcomes

You will be able to:

  • understand the relevant particle physics theory and skills linking in to GCSE and A level physics
  • understand how the CERN@school chip and associated data can help you to undertake genuine particle physics research in your school
  • start to develop ideas for a research within the range of projects available within CERN@school
  • become an IRIS partner school
