Developing a professional registration scheme for Arts Technicians

Hi All

I am registrar with the Institute of Science and Technology and I am looking for volunteers to become part of a working group to develop our 'Registered Practioner' registration scheme for non-science technicians.  There are recognised registration schemes for Science and Engineering technicians little or no similar schemes for Arts technicians.  We already have a scheme running but we want to refresh that so that it is relevant for today's technicians and meets their requirements.  See https://istonline.org.uk/training/professional-and-personal-development/registered-practitioners/

Please let me know ifyou are interested.  I envisage that we would meet every 4-6 months and can do so virtually if necessary.

Thanks

Michelle Jackson

Michelle,

I would be interested in joining the working group.  I assume one of the aims is to sign up the 100 arts and media technicians as registered practitioners needed to create the new arts and media professional register?

https://www.stem.org.uk/blog/new-register-arts-technicians-what-you-need...

Professional registration for all technical staff is something my current instituion sees as a strategic aim.

Thanks,

Mark

Thank you all for your interest!  I am v excited about doing something for 'Arts' technicians.  We are hoping to have a meeting in Nottingham the week beginning 11th December (but not the 12th).  If you can't make it in person we will be able to connect with you virtually (I hope).

Best wishes

Michelle

I think an important item for the agenda could be the topic of the title "technician" I know plenty of technicians that have pretty intensive teaching and research schedules and as such the title Technical tutor would be far more appropriate however its very rarely ever used. Id be very interested in exploring this subject further and getting some feedback from other people perspectives etc.

Dear Matt, we use Technical Tutor at UCA very well (we also have technicians, and technical assistants). The technician tutors deliver the usual techncian duties (including demonstration), but also provide 360 hours of technical teaching delivered in accordance with lesson plans and unit outcomes each year.

Hi Tim,

That’s really interesting info, so are your technical tutors on the same pay grades as academic tutors or do you have different grades for each?

lindsayartist (not verified)

I would have thought this could induce issues regarding pay scales?

TimSavage (not verified)

Hi, our payscales are:

Grade 4:  Techncial Assistant (reactive support, maintenance, admin etc).

Grade 5:  Technician (above, plus demonstrations)

Grade 6:  Techncian Tutor (above plus 360 hours of formal teaching)

Grade 8:  Lecturer (entry level academic role)

Grade 9: Senior Lecturer (with teaching qualifications and research profile). This grade is also used Technical Managers.

Grade 10:  Course Leaders.

The responsibilities of each are well deliniated by the role profiles but, as is common there is some blurring around the technical and academic remits.  Most of the technicians have post graduate degrees and teaching qualifications.  In fact, we are increasingly finding our technicians successfully apply for academic roles (I have just completed a research project on this subject which is undergoing peer review for publication).  Happy to post here once the review process is complete.

Ah thats some great info, its really good to see how other organisations structure their roles. I look forward to reading your research, sounds right up my street!
