Rounding

This resource contains two interactive excel files which deal with rounding of discrete and continuous variables and pose problems involving practical examples of calculations using rounded values.

Rounded Numbers: Bounds The first interactive sheet shows two numbers rounded to the nearest integer and illustrates this on a number line. The next sheets deal with the maximum and minimum values of the sum, difference, product and quotient of these numbers. Each number is rounded to the nearest integer, new values can be generated and answers can be revealed. Subsequent sheets present problems using more practical applications of these skills and the starting values are rounded to the nearest 20, 5, 50, half hour and other amounts. There are a further five sheets of questions which may be suitable for classroom use.

Rounding Numbers-SF and DP The first interactive sheet shows sets of numbers which are to be rounded to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000. Answers can be revealed and new sets of numbers generated. The next sheets show amounts of money which are to be rounded to the nearest £1, £5, £10 or £20 then decimals which are to be rounded to one, two or three significant figures. Examples of the rounding of both continuous and discrete variables are given on the next two sheets when students need to identify the upper and lower bounds. The last three interactive sheets give sets of values which need to be rounded to given numbers of decimal places, significant figures or correct to given units. There are a further eight sheets of questions which may be suitable for classroom use.

Note This program was designed by be viewed on a screen with a resolution of 1024 x 768. Users may have to adjust the resolution of their screen for the pages to display as was originally intended. The program uses macros which need to be enabled on users’ machine.
