The articles in this book were written at a time when small calculators had only just become freely available.  The collection of articles included were  selected from "Mathematics in Schools" and "Mathematics Teaching"  and will provide a useful and interesting insight into this time.

"There is evidence to show that pupils' facility with number and their understanding of basic concepts will improve significantly if calculators are used appropriately. Contrary to some popular opinion, calculators do not constitute a-threat to mathematics education. Used sensibly they will make pupils better at mathematics, not worse."
