Holes, gaps and cavities: stages 1 and 2
"Science 5/13" is a series of units which aims to show teachers how to help children develop enquiring minds and to learn by doing and finding out. It offers teachers advice and guidance, starting points and background information on the ways in which science may be organized and taught. The series is designed to tie in with the Attainment Targets of the National Curriculum.
The teachers' units are related to the three stages in children's educational development, for example: stage one, where they are thinking intuitively or have reached the stage of concrete operations; stage two, where this prior stage is well developed; and stage three, where the children are beginning to use abstractions in their thinking. All the units include a section on "Objectives for Children Learning Science", which is intended to help teachers decide what achievements might reasonably be expected from children at the various stages of educational development.
