Regreen the desert
Practical Action have supplied this teacher's pack to challenge students to use their STEM skills to come up with solutions to a problem of water shortage in Sudan. The pack includes a PowerPoint presentation and Teacher Guide so that teachers can outline the problem to their students. The PowerPoint makes reference to the United Nations Goals for Sustainable Development which underpins this activity.
Students find out that as a result of climate change, parts of north east Sudan are suffering from failing crops, deforestation and flash floods. Students then engage in practical activities to encourage them to think creatively about possible ways to capture rainwater which can then be used for irrigation. Further materials in the pack include student activity guides, blank certificates of participation and a poster to promote the challenge.
