This task is designed to assess how well students understand using approximations for temperature conversions, and assessing their accuracy.

The following methods are given for converting from degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit:

Method 1: multiply the Celsius figure by 9, then divide by 5, then add 32

Method 2: double the Celsius figure then add 30

Students do an example calculation for 20˚ C to Fahrenheit.

They then go on to find what temperatures the second method gives an answer that is too high.

This task is from the Mathematics Assessment Resource Service, a collaboration between UC Berkeley and the Shell Centre team at the University of Nottingham.
