Gold awards: aerodynamics of sails

In this project students carry out some research about how sails ‘work’ - what are the aerodynamic principles of a sail, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of each type of sail? They are encouraged to make contact with a yacht builder, sail-maker or University department with an interest in the aerodynamics of wings or sails, and find out from their contact how sails are tested, and try to arrange to observe a sail being tested for its aerodynamic properties.

Students then design and build their own rig for testing different types of sail, carry out their tests and show their results to their industrial contact.
