Is it worth converting to LPG (liquid petroleum gas)?

This resource from the IET Faraday programme, supported by MEI and Tomorrow's Engineers, provides students the opportunity to explore the cost of using LPG (liquid petroleum gas), an alternative fuel for vehicles.

"LPG is a by-product of crude oil extraction and the refining process. Many people who consider LPG as an alternative to petrol do so because they believe that the combustion of propane results in lower carbon dioxide emissions. In terms of fuel costs, LPG costs a little more than half the price of petrol or diesel, but fuel economy is about 20-25% lower."

The resources include a presentation that introduces the key concepts, and a series of questions for students to explore. The teaching guide includes classroom notes, discussion points, extension activity suggestions, answers and details of the curriculum content covered. The resource also includes a spreadsheet to help students to calculate the costs involved.
