Wind Chill

In this activity students explore the problem of analysing the effect of wind speed when temperatures are low requiring students to be able to substitute values into a formula. The formula for wind chill used in this resource depends upon the air temperature and the speed of the wind.

Task 10: wind chill factor - guidance
The teachers' guidance points out that the formula looks complicated and suggests that weaker students may need to be given a suitable introduction that may include substitution. The formula has been based upon analysis of data rather than a theoretical model. The guidance suggests that students research other formulae for Wind Chill Factor. An alternative formula is given which had been used during World War Two to help to decide on clothing for troops for a proposed invasion of occupied Norway.

Task 10: wind chill factor - activity sheet
This student handout shows a picture of lambs wearing blue woollen jumpers suggesting that they need protection against the effects of cold weather. Students are given the formula for the Wind Chill Factor. The five sensations from "very cool" to "freezing cold" are described in terms of the Wind Chill Factor and in words. Students are asked to substitute two sets of numbers into the formula in order to compare two different situations. The final challenge is for students to create a ready reckoner.
