Year Four/Five Spring Term

This resource has been created for primary children in mixed year group classes, from seven to nine years of age, to support the learning of negative numbers, decimals, mental addition and subtraction. The detailed weekly plans contain differentiated activities for the two year groups, guided tasks and details of resources required for each lesson. Objectives covered in the lessons include:

Week One

Year 4

  • Use negative numbers in context of temperature, place on a line, order positive and negative numbers
  • Divide whole 2-digit numbers to give one-place decimals and multiply one-place decimals to give whole numbers
  • Recognise decimal and fraction forms of tenths

Year 5

  • Calculate rises and falls in temperature
  • Know what each digit represents in six-digit numbers, place on lines, round to the nearest 100 or 1000, use place value to add and subtract, compare using < and > signs

Week Two

Year 4

  • Multiply and divide by 10 and 100 (whole answers or 1dp)
  • Add and subtract 0.1 and 1 to/from numbers with one decimal place
  • Place numbers with one decimal place on a number line, round to the nearest whole, compare and write one in between, e.g. 2.1 and 1.2, say what whole number comes between them
  • Multiply multiples of 10 and 100 by 1-digit numbers

Year 5

  • Use place value to add and subtract numbers with 1 or 2 decimal places
  • Round numbers with 2 decimal places to the nearest whole and tenth
  • Multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000
  • Use place value to add and subtract
  • Add and subtract near multiples of 100 and 1000
  • Use counting up to subtract four digit-numbers from multiples of 1000
