Otherwise Engaged

Jenni Ingram and Robert Ward-Penny give their thoughts on classrooms today by examining the variety of activities that can be seen in the mathematics classroom. Students are frequently engaged in a variety of planned activities, and although the textbook is still a significant presence, teachers regularly supplement its use with a variety of tasks and games.

[b]Otherwise engaged[/b] questions with what the students are engaging in these instances and explores the difference between students engaging with the task and students engaging with the mathematics. The piece concludes with suggested methods the teacher may employ to ensure that engagement with the mathematics is the main focus for the student.
