This resource aimed at Key Stage Two, links to the topic areas of states of matter and properties and changes of materials. It provides background knowledge for teachers and a range of activities which explore the properties of solids, liquids and gases. It also highlights the problems children encounter when learning about them and provides science poems and a concept cartoon to promote discussion to develop understanding.

Ideas for investigations and demonstrations include: looking at solids with air trapped in them, viscosity of liquids and reactions which produce carbon dioxide. There is also a focus on the key scientific skills of carrying out a fair test, choosing and using equipment accurately, observation, recording and working cooperatively in a group.
