A report by the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) highlighting the opinion that mathematics teaching in the Further Education sector plays a critical role in the delivery of post-16 education, although evidence suggests that this sector remains relatively unknown to policymakers.

This report asserts that the government, its agencies and colleges should clearly acknowledge the dual importance of mathematics as an academic subject in its own right and as a subject that underpins vocational disciplines, and ensure that future policies implemented within the further education sector do not result in a reduction in the provision of mathematics teaching. The report resulted in a total of twenty six recommendations.
