Engineering Products
This activity, from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), explores engineered materials in more detail, looking at a range of new or smart materials in industry. The resource is designed to allow students to: • understand that materials can be designed and made to specific characteristics and purposes • be able to identify the properties of materials required for a specific function • explore a range of smart materials, understanding why and how they have been developed.
This activity requires students to investigate a smart material and share the results of their research with the class.
The activity is supported by the following:
- Research project- an activity sheet in which students research either hydro jackets, cooling suits, carbon nanotubes, computerised trainers, memory foam earphone tips or a smart shape memory alloy shirt.
- A podcast entitled copycat discussing printers and photocopiers.
The activity is part of a full set of resources D30 and is supported by the the video The Amazing D30
