Nuffield Maths: Bronto Books Set B

Nuffield Foundation provide these resources from the Nuffield Maths 5-11 project, which allow students the opportunity to practice using and reading simple mathematical vocabulary. They support, as well as extend, the basic mathematical concepts introduced to young children.

The image of Bronto at the foot of some pages provides elements of surprise, security and fun, as well as making comments that underline or extend the ideas illustrated on that page.

Snail's walk - positional words are introduced through a simple story, while the illustrations provide strong visual clues to the meaning of relevant words.

Mini half-as-big - concentrates on the idea of half as big, tall and hungry, as well as attempting to refine some of the possible meanings of big. Reference to size, quantity and capacity are included.

Left and right - five aspects of mathematics are introduced, left, right, middle, row, and column.

Bronto joins the circus - is designed to help young children to recognise the colours and colour words that are often used on work-cards. The illustrations provide strong clues for reading, or for guessing the remaining words.

Action words - introduces students to some of the basic sight words used on mathematical worksheets or cards.

Greedy pig - the ideas of 'too much' and 'too many' are dealt with simply in the context of the story of a pig who would not stop eating.
