Similarity and Enlargement

This SMILE resource contains one pack of games, investigations, worksheets and practical activities supporting the teaching and learning of similarity and enlargement.

Similarity and enlargement contains fourteen work cards requiring the students to investigate similarity of different sized dominoes, consider the effect on the area of shapes when the lengths of the sides are doubled, investigate the effects of different scale factors, explore the properties of similar triangles, investigate similarity using pentominoes, explore the effects of a negative scale factor, consider the volumes of similar shapes, and use matrices to perform enlargements.

SMILE (Secondary Mathematics Individualised Learning Experiment) was initially developed as a series of practical activities for secondary school students by practising teachers in the 1970s. It became a complete individualised scheme based around a network of activity cards and assessments.

Related resources include answers to all of the cards and test books and answers.
