Simon Brilliant Revisited

This resource from Teachers TV features Inspector Clare Gillies, as she makes a return visit to secondary mathematics teacher Simon Brilliant, to see if he has maintained or improved his teaching standards since her last visit three years ago. Previously Simon was classed as good by Clare, having received tailored CPD support and communications coaching, with three weeks back in the classroom to put her advice into practice.

Simon reflects on how taking part in the programme has influenced his teaching and he now feels that his role is that of a facilitator, encouraging students to become independent learners and, following Clare's advice, he provides practical examples of where the mathematics being taught is used in the real world. In preparation for Clare's return Simon receives constructive advice from David Caplin, his Head of Department, about whole class questioning.

Students are engaged throughout the lesson on tessellation, which has been carefully planned, and they enjoy the practical nature of the tasks they have been given.
