Gene Dreams

In this Genetic Futures workshop from the Centre for Science Education and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), students were asked to project themselves 50 years into the future to discover the breakthroughs that advances in DNA technology might bring.

At a ‘Press Briefing’ for all students, a ‘journalist’ explained how to write an article for the ‘Planet News’ and gather the facts at a press conference. After dividing into their workshop groups, students were given a summary sheet with hints for asking key questions during the press conference.

At the press conference, facilitators took on the role of scientists of the future by presenting a ‘breakthrough application’ of DNA technology. For example ‘Prehistoric theme park to open’. With the aid of a library of titles, side-boxes, graphics, and writing frames, students then worked in small groups to prepare their ‘front page’ article in one hour.
