Mathematics Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4

This is the fourth annual Ofsted report to assess the success of the implementation of the National Curriculum across all four key stages. The report is based upon a large number of visits by Her Majesty’s Inspectors to a variety of schools in the academic year 1992-93.

The report highlights the areas of the curriculum which are being implemented successfully and where weaknesses occur, giving reasons for both and indicates in which key stage the strengths and weaknesses lie. The problem implementing the strand ‘Using and Applying mathematics’ (AT1) is discussed.

The report comments upon other factors which affect the teaching of mathematics such as timetabling, staffing, resources and accommodation. Assessment, recording and reporting of achievement is discussed and areas for staff development suggested.

The paper concludes by highlighting teachers’ concerns about the implementation of the National Curriculum and by summarising the main findings of the report.
