George Ward Spicy Farm Pulao

Chef Challenge is a series of Teachers TV programmes in which professional chefs inspire students to cook creative dishes using local produce.

In this challenge, chef Peter Vaughan visits The George Ward School, in Wiltshire, and takes students to local shops to help them choose good quality ingredients for his two recipes, South American vegetable Pulao and Caribbean coleslaw. The aim is that a dish for a family of four costs no more than £2.00 using local produce that is in season. Head of Food Technology, Jane Chaffey, thinks it is important that students know where their food comes from and that they have an awareness of which foods are locally grown and which have been transported across the world.

Peter demonstrates how to cook the dishes, giving the students tips on the parts of the recipe that require attention. The students then design their own versions of the dishes and think about effective presentation ideas. The experience gives the students the opportunity to try new ingredients, cook with a professional chef and share their recipes with other students and staff.
