# Focus Year 7/8 Shape and Space Lead-in

The material in this Century Maths Shape and Space Lead-in book is aimed at students working at below average levels. These students will have covered the concepts in their primary schools. The activities attempt to identify misconceptions and provide experiences to help students overcome them. The approach adopted uses a number of practical activities including the use of computer software, tangrams and the making of three dimensional shapes.

Activities involving tangrams, pentagons, hexagons, polygons
5. Symmetry
Practical activities involving line symmetry
6. Directions
Giving directions using the 8 major compass points in story context
7. Solid shapes
Cube, pyramid, cuboid, nets, cylinder, cone, simple description and construction

[b]Focus Teacher’s Support Pack Year 7/8 Shape and Space Lead-in[/b]
The first half of the Teacher's Support Pack covers teaching issues such as approaches to problem solving, record keeping, equipment and a reminder of the icons and flags used in the student texts. This part of the teacher support pack is essentially common to all of the Focus teacher support packs.

The second part provides a summary of the units followed by a two page spread on each unit which gives teaching suggestions on each student activity. The guidance on the activities needs to be read alongside the student material.
