This report from the Assessment of Performance Unit came about as an increasing interest was being focused on how students communicate mathematical ideas and what factors facilitate or hinder their thinking and performance. This booklet features a selection of discussions and examples that illustrate aspects of how students aged 11-15 demonstrate their mathematical knowledge in written, spoken and practical forms.
The main sections of the report are:
The practical interactive setting which covers practical work and its efficacy, attitudes and expectations, students using practical apparatus and the challenge of activity based tasks.
Communicating about mathematics includes mathematical oracy, questioning, phrasing of questions, describing and explaining, methods of recording and mathematical vocabulary.
Groups and group work deals with introducing group work for the first time, setting up group situations and the advantages and difficulties of group work.
