LAMP Teachers’ Handbook 2

The LAMP Project was sponsored by the Association for Science Education. The aim was to consider the teaching of science to Less Academically Motivated Pupils in secondary schools, with particular regard to the 14 to 16 age range. At a time when modular courses were new, this second of two handbooks for teachers was written to help teachers considering the use of the LAMP topic briefs as the basis of modular science courses.

The purpose of the handbook was to draw attention to the organisational aspect of modular science courses for students of low ability and motivation. Although produced as part of the LAMP Project, it was hoped that the handbook would be of value to any school contemplating the introduction of a modular course, irrespective of any decision to use other LAMP materials.

In writing the handbook the aim of the authors was to describe the experience of teachers familiar with modular course organisation. For this reason the largest section was devoted to five case studies of schools where this type of course was in operation. These were presented as written by the schools, with no attempt at editing.
