Placements for Technology Lecturers

Produced by the Learning Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), this case study looks at the theme of knowledge and technology transfer. This case study looks at the experiences of three lecturers from Carlisle College’s Technology Department who engaged in a programme of industrial secondments through the New Engineering Foundation to update their technical capability and knowledge.

The placements were with four very different organisations, but were focused on the areas of advanced manufacturing, CAE and control systems. The organisations that provided the secondments were:
• United Biscuits / McVities – a large food producer and well-known local employer
• CADWorks – a small independent design consultancy working in power and energy, food and process engineering
• Innovia Films – a cutting-edge, global polypropylene and cellulose film production company
• Sunderland University Institute of Automotive & Manufacturing Advanced Practice – an industry facing research centre with expertise in automotive design and manufacturing and ultra low carbon vehicles.
