Year Eight handling data mini-pack

This comprehensive pack on handling data from the National strategies was designed to support the teaching in Year Eight. The mini pack contains a sample unit which has been developed through a flexible use of the sample medium-term plans for mathematics. The unit emphasises discussion and interpretation of data alongside a high level of student interaction and engagement. It also gives students an opportunity to improve their speaking and listening skills. A variety of stimulating activities is included together with appropriate references to data drawn from the Framework’s supplement of examples and a data library. The data library is divided into two sections: a unit library and a source library.

Unit library 

The unit on handling data in Year Eight draws on a variety of carefully selected and prepared data sources. These materials can be printed, copied and organised into a collection that will enrich and enliven the teaching of handling data. The chart on page 12 of the mini-pack shows the structure of the unit library, cross-referenced to the handling data unit plan.

Source library

 In the source library, files are grouped into folders classified by subject matter or source. Some files in the unit library link to folders in the source library.

Securing progression in handling data: course handbook

This course handbook was part of the mathematics strand core training for schools in 2003-04. The focus of this course was to study progression in handling data in Key Stage Three. By revisiting aspects of the Year Eight handling data mini-pack teachers would have the opportunity to consider how the ideas may be adapted and developed in Years Seven and Nine.
