Produced for the Debating Matters competition, this topic guides looks at the use of developing countries for clinical trials. It helps students to understand and debate the issues around this controversial area. There is a concern that powerful companies and research institutions cannot be held to account for their work in developing countries. Is the pharmaceutical industry using citizens of resource-poor countries as guinea pigs for drugs which have more relevance for the west than for the country hosting the trial? Or are current regulations and practices adequate to ensure that citizens of resource-poor countries are not exploited?
