Which plant should we close?

This open ended Core Maths task, suitable for group work, provides opportunities for work with number, statistics, graphs and spreadsheets.

Students are given a data sheet about plastic bottle production at three factory sites. The data includes cost of heating, lighting and wages and the average daily efficiency and production figures.

Students are asked to decide which of the sites they would close (should the need arise) based on the given data. Students are encouraged to use spreadsheets to help them to justify their decision.

One of the two sets of teachers' notes gives a suggested lesson plan with supplementary questions to aid discussion. The other set of teachers' notes gives an overview of the task.
