Formulae *suitable for home teaching*

This downloadable animation is part of the multimedia package Stuff and Substance, developed by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme (SEP). It can be used to develop ideas relating to the formulae of substances.

The formula of a substance tells us which atoms a substance is made from and their relative numbers. For molecular structures the formula gives the atoms making up a molecule. For giant structures the formula represents the repeating unit. This animation is a formative assessment task which gives practice at linking formulae to atom structure representations of substances, both molecular and giant.

These video and animation files form part of the resources in the section Formulae in the Stuff and Substance multimedia package, which provides a series of interactive pages that can be used by teachers or students in the classroom.
