Water

This is one of the 14 Background Books published for Stage III of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book highlights the importance of water and explains key ideas related to its chemistry.

There are five parts to this book:

*Part 1: Chemical and physical properties of water
The special properties of water explained in terms of the polarity of its molecules and hydrogen bonding

*Part 2: The supply of water
Water supply in the past – especially in London during the nineteenth century. Water source in England in the 1960s. Looking to the ‘future’ for water supplies around the world.

*Part 3: The water cycle
An outline, with diagrams, of the water cycle.

*Part 4: Purification
Water treatment to prevent disease by disinfection, removal of suspended solids and the control of hardness in water. The challenges presented by radioactive chemicals and non-biodegradable detergents.

*Part 5: The uses of water
Water for power, industry and agriculture.

This book was published in 1968 and many parts of it are very dated.
