Colloids
This is one of the 14 Background Books published for Stage III of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated and designed to be attractive. This book describes applications of chemistry.
There are three parts to this book:
*Part 1: The properties of colloids
Covering, diffusion, Brownian motion, light scattering and dialysis.
*Part 2: The forces which keep particles in suspension
The distinction between lyophilic and lyophobic sols and the factors that stop the colloid particles clumping together and settling.
*Part 3: Familiar colloids
Examples to illustrate examples of the eight types of colloid classified according to the states of the dispersed and continuous phases. The role of soaps and other emulsifying agents to stabilise colloidal dispersions. The use of electrostatic precipitators to remove dispersed solids from waste gases.
This book was published in 1968 and is still worth reading despite a few examples and illustrations that are clearly dated but can be seen in their historical context.
