Detergents

This is one of the 18 Background Books published for Stage II of the Nuffield Chemistry Sample Scheme. The books were highly illustrated designed to be attractive. This book describes applications of chemistry to cleaning.

There are three parts to this book:
*Part 1: Soap
This part explains how soap is formed from fats and oils, and how soaps work. It includes the chemical structure of soap.

*Part 2: Synthetic deteregents
This part describes the chemical nature of synthetic detergents and outlines how they work as they remove dirt.

*Part 3: Manufacturing detergents
This part outlines the production of soaps and synthetic detergents.

The book was first published in 1968. The chemical detail is more suited to a post-16 course. There is no mention of the environmental problems that can arise from synthetic detergents that are no biodegradable.
