Immunisation
This resource, from the Association for Science Education (ASE) includes a number of activities to support immunisation teaching in science and the QCA Citizenship unit 'What's in the public interest?' Science and technology can bring great benefits to humanity. At the same time science can seem challenging, even threatening. How can we ensure that science works for people and with people?
The context of immunisation was chosen as students will have been immunised at several times in their lives, as part of national health programmes, and perhaps for travel, and because immunisation is a frequent topic of controversy - think about the debate over the MMR vaccine, and the question of vaccination of cattle against foot and mouth disease.
However, immunisation is purely an example. Many other issues, such as food safety, organ transplants or forensic science could provide an alternative focus, depending on yourstudents' interests and experiences.
