KS1-Cooking and nutrition
This list supports the Design, Make and Evaluate process which is integral to D&T through the topic area of food preparation and cooking. The activities support learning about cooking and nutrition with 5- 7 year-olds. There are lots of ideas for developing skills used in D&T through focussed practical tasks, so children are able to apply these techniques to their preparation of different dishes. The resources provide opportunities to explore the principles of a healthy and balanced diet and allow children to find out more about the food that they eat and where it comes from. There are a range of authentic contexts for children to design, make and evaluate their own dishes and make any changes to improve them. In particular for the people that they have designed them for.
Which Fruits Would Be Good in Your Salad?
In this unit from the Nuffield Primary Solutions in Design and Technology, children design and make a bowl of fruit salad to share with the other children in the class.
Starting with exploring a variety of fruit the children will then learn how to cut and arrange fruit into a tasty and pleasing presentation.
They will also develop their research skills as they discover the preferences of the other children in the group to make a salad that appeals to everyone. They will need to consider the look, feel and taste of the fruit salad.
This resource introduces the sensory evaluation of food, how to use everyday cutting tools safely and how to present and evaluate their finished product.
How Do You Like Your Toast?
In this unit from Nuffield Primary Solutions in Design and Technology, children research individual preferences for toast within their class and then prepare toast based on these preferences. In focussed tasks the children will learn how to create a survey, explore different bread types, toasting times and spreading techniques. They will also make design and presentation decisions and evaluate their finished product.
The activity can be expanded by asking the children to design a production system that caters to needs for toast and spread from a number of people.
Perfect plant salad
From the British Nutrition Foundation, this lesson plan and supporting resources aim to help children understand and be able to explain that some food we eat comes from plants, including vegetables and fruits. They will work together through exploratory activities, tasting different vegetables and learn where they come from and how they grow.
These activities will help learners to name parts of plants that we eat and to perform simple food skills safely such as cutting with scissors, grating, measuring and mixing ingredients.
This session contains a lesson plan, an advice sheet to support setting up cooking with your class, display cards and a letter with activity to send home to parents in order to continue the learning outside of the classroom. Although this resource is designed for EYFS, it could be easily adapted to work across the primary phase.
10 Food-based sessions
This resource contains ten activity ideas which involve preparing healthy foods for different meals within the day. They explore healthy eating and the importance of a healthy balanced diet. Though designed for EYFS, the activities are easily adapted for use with KS1 children. They all support the development of skills in D&T and the design, make and evaluate process. Each activity includes teachers’ notes, a letter to parents and information on safe food preparation.
Year 1
Farming STEMterprise Year 1
This collection of resources provide a cross-curricular project for younger children, which supports learning in D&T, science, mathematics and English. Children are set the challenge of setting up their own yoghurt café.
They work through a series of activities in which they design and make a logo for their cafe, design and make yoghurt to sell in it, create packaging for the yoghurt and advertising materials for the cafe. Activities may be done as standalone lessons, but they are best carried out as a project.
This resource has been provided by NFU education.
Year 2
Farming STEMterprise Year 2
This collection of resources provide a cross-curricular project for younger children, which supports learning in D&T, science, mathematics and English.
Children are set the challenge of setting up their own pizza business. Using this context, they work through a series of activities in which they design and make a logo for their business, grow some of the ingredients to make pizza, design and make pizza and packaging to sell in it. They then advertise their business and and practise working with money and paying for items using different combinations of coins. Activities may be used as standalone lessons, but they are best carried out as a project.
