Statisitics - Key Stage 4
This collection of resources supports the teaching of statistics in secondary mathematics.
Here are some favourite activities selected by the NRICH team.
- Which List Is Which? Six samples were taken from two distributions but they got muddled up. Can you work out which list is which?
- Box Plot Match Match the cumulative frequency curves with their corresponding box plots.
These are just a few of the activities on Handling Data that you can find on the NRICH curriculum pages.
The activities below, taken from the STEM Learning website, complement the NRICH activities above.
Interpreting Bar Charts, Pie Charts, Box and Whisker Plots S5
A useful way of starting the Which List Is Which? problem is to set out the data using stem-and-leaf diagrams and box-and-whisker diagrams, and then examining the key features of the diagrams.
These materials from the Standards Unit are useful to use in advance of tackling the 'Which List is Which' problem.
Averaging Continuous Data
This video is useful to support the NRICH Box Plot Match activity.
In this video, ideas on class intervals and cumulative frequency graphs are discussed and explored through practical examples.
Box and Whisker
This video resource supports the use of the NRICH Box Plot Match activity, serving as a helpful introduction to the topic of box plots.
There are a series of Excel files that build from setting up a box and whisker diagram, to comparing two distributions, and concluding with working with the median and inter-quartile range.
There are three more sheets of questions for use in the classroom.
