Best Evidence Science Teaching - age 7 to11

The best teaching draws on the best evidence. 

Amid increasing calls for evidence-based practice in classrooms, teachers’ lives are usually too busy for them to comprehensively access and implement the best evidence we can find emerging from education research.

Best Evidence Science Teaching for primary school science (Primary BEST) is a collection of research evidence-informed teaching and learning resources, for children age 7 to 11. All of the resources are developed by the University of York Science Education Group, in collaboration with of the Centre for Industry Education Collaboration, a team of primary science experts at the University of York.

The Salters’ Institute has funded the BEST project since it began in 2016. The Institute of Physics has co-funded the BEST 11 to 16 project since 2021, and the Earth and Space Primary BEST topic has been funded by the Ogden Trust.

Research evidence-informed progression toolkits for key concepts in science provide:

  • appropriately-sequenced steps for learning progression
  • diagnostic questions to reveal preconceptions and common misunderstandings
  • response activities to challenge misunderstandings and encourage conceptual development
