Creative Problem Solving in Chemistry

These resources were designed to

* To improve students' ability to communicate and work together.

*To develop students' problem solving skill.

*To give students to opportunity to be creative.

*To show students that science is more than 'getting the right answer' and that it can involve using one's own judgement.

The problem-based activities all have a variety of possible solutions. The key feature of the resources is that students work in groups to discuss the possible solutions critically before presenting their ideas to the class.

Resources

Three White Solids

This problem-solving activity, from the Royal Society of Chemistry, provides students with three white solids which they need to identify using any chemical test and suitable laboratory apparatus. Students need to work as a group to discuss the problem and decide how they are going to carry out the investigation....

A Weak Acid

This problem-solving activity, from the Royal Society of Chemistry, asks students to explain what ‘weak’ means in terms of the number of ions and molecules in a solution of a weak acid. They need to find out as much information as they can to explain this, starting with its Ka (or pKa) value. Students need to work as...

What Compound?

This problem-solving activity, from the Royal Society of Chemistry, asks students to identify an unknown compound from a limited amount of information. Students need to work as a group to discuss the problem and suggest as many ways as possible to identify the solid. They are required to devise an analytical procedure...

What Makes It Go?

This problem-solving activity, from the Royal Society of Chemistry, could be used immediately before students meet Gibbs free energy to demonstrate the inadequacy of the possible explanations. Students are asked to carry out a series of experiments and, without doing any calculations, explain qualitatively what...
