The Advanced Physics Project for Independent Learning (APPIL) was sponsored by the Inner London Education Authority published by John Murray to support independent learning by students of advanced level physics. The resources included components and features to enable:
* students to know where they are going, assess their progress, and learn different things in different ways
* teacher to assess the students' progress and manage the learning resources
