Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Public engagement team works with teachers, science education experts and the Institute’s scientists to develop teaching resources on genetics and genomics.
These tried and tested resources cover topics that relate to our genomics research and are relevant to the national curriculum and GCSE, AS and A-level science specifications for 14-19 year olds. The resources in this collection may be used during lessons, science clubs or as homework tasks and range from animations to paper and web-based activities that cover topics including:
• how DNA is sequenced
• the Human Genome Project
• genetics of cancer
• genetics of bacterial pathogens such as MRSA and Salmonella
• biology of malaria
• human variation in health and disease
• use of model organisms in genome research
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is one of the world's leading genome centres. A key player in the Human Genome Project, the Sanger Institute is focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease by using the latest genomic technologies and techniques.

From the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these resources will help students to understand the processes involved in the sequencing of DNA and the Human Genome Project. Animations illustrate: * The Human Genome Project (HGP) * DNA sequencing * Producing DNA libraries * Subcloning of DNA The information is quite...
Produced by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these resources will help students to understand the structure of DNA, where it is found in cells and the function it performs. The activities include:
* Animation which 'zooms in' on a body to ultimately reveal the structure of DNA
* Activities making...
Produced by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these materials help students to understand the process of protein synthesis from transcription of DNA to translation into an amino acid sequence. Students are able to view an interactive animation of the process and also reinforce their understanding by interpreting...
Produced by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, these resources provide extensive infromation on a range of disease-causing organisms. Resources include student worksheets, presentations, animations and teacher guidance. Materials are suitable for a wide age range and will help students to understand: * bacterial...
