Mathematics in the real world

This is a resource book for mathematics teachers for use in Y9, Y10 and Y11. Its aims are twofold: first, to provide a vehicle for covering much of the National Curriculum through applications of mathematics to real-life problems; second, to provide a resource which can be used for the coursework component of GCSE.

The work is based around five themes: the car park, linkages, critical path analysis, boxes and packaging and the stadium. Between them they provide 49 worksheets which have been tested in the classroom.

For each theme there are both open-ended and structured worksheets so that teachers have a choice of approaches. Also in the pack are five colour posters. These can be used to stimulate interest and discussion before starting on a theme or as a centrepiece to a display of pupils' work.
