What does it mean to be a placement provider?

*Following the relaxation of the COVID-19 restrictions in the UK, placements are expected to be hosted face-to-face in 2022. However, this is subject to the placement host organisations’ ongoing response to the pandemic and some placements might be hosted in a hybrid way with some activities to be provided virtually.

You can also download our programme guide for placement providers to find out more.

 Programme guide for placement providers

Spend part of your summer inspiring the next generation by offering a placement to a student that will:

  • Provide opportunities to your staff to develop coaching, mentoring and management skills

  • Give you invaluable assistance on a current research or development project

  • Fulfil public engagement, widening participation and corporate social responsibility goals

  • Enhance institutional reputation with cohorts of students who could be future employees

“inspiring the future generation into the field of research and developing their transferable skills was something I felt would be of great benefit to the students... It would also give them the glow and joy of what research can bring and hopefully spark their interest in a subject area.”  Current placement provider

Programme timetable

  •   winter

The Nuffield Research Placements programme opens for applications from students.

Student applications close. Placement providers are approached to confirm participation, provide placement information and then be matched with successful applicants.

Students begin work on their pre-placement independent study assignments and placement providers are invited to attend an induction event. Students will then get in touch with their placement provider before undertaking the research or development collaboration with a knowledge expert.

Students submit their finished work and receive their certificate of participation. All stakeholders are asked to provide feedback and also invited to a special celebration event.
