Air Miles
This More Maths Grads resource, from the Maths Careers website, investigates the maths used in transport and is based on the travelling salesman problem.
Students are given a table containing information on the cost of air travel between nine different cities and asked to plan a route that visits each destination at the smallest cost. Possible approaches are discussed and links to further materials are also included.
Fire Hydrants
This Nuffield activity asks students to experiment with the placing and number of fire hydrants required in a city with square blocks that form a rectangular grid.

In this video, from Head Steam, Hannah Fry gives an overview of the power of algebra. She explains how the same formula can be applied in a variety of situations and gives an introduction as to why it is important that students are able to understand and use algebra.

Mathematics in Real Life Contexts - Air Travel
A collection of three resources exploring the mathematics used in air travel. Students explore:
- Scheduling of aircraft, the construction of timetables and dealing with time zone differences
- Scheduling pilots, using formulae to calculate the working time of pilots
- The use of formulae to calculate flight charges accrued by aircraft flying over different countries.
NASA Space Math
This series of activities from NASA are based on a weekly series of space science problems distributed to teachers in the United States, from 2004 to 2010. They were intended for students aged 9 to 19 looking for additional challenges in the mathematics and physical science curriculum. The problems were created to be authentic glimpses of modern science and engineering issues, often involving actual research data.
