My employer has also been very good at offering flexible working. I work a 35 hour week but with two 'half' days so I can collect children.
Also a recent restructure into a Faculty technical team has removed the pressure of being a sole technician in a Department. Team members can support each other and my impression is our flexibility and capacity to support each other has improved immensely. Work doesn't pile up when you're off!

My employer (University of Bristol) are very good at offering flexible working patterns and this has proved very useful to me on a personal basis recently. The ability to move start and finish times by 30 minutes allowed me to deal with an ongoing family matter and still provide support for the teaching commitments I had.
