A fantastic way to improve STEM-related careers knowledge, STEM Insight immerses you in either an industry or university setting to gain a better understanding of STEM organisations and careers.

We’ve had some great feedback from teachers about their experience on the STEM Insight programme. Why not take a look?

Science in action at BP

Dr Adrian Rowley has written an online diary that details every part of his experience with BP. From his first impression of BP to exciting discussions of engineering and science, to learning about the importance of life skills in potential employees.

“I was looking forward to seeing science in action today. The resident geologist did not disappoint us and gave a fascinating insight into long term exploration and planning.”

Three teachers experience life at Babraham

Three teachers joined Babraham Institute and were introduced to interesting research topics like cell cannibalism and learned about the scientific facilities that support research, as well as looking at public engagement and commercialisation.

“I’ve found it interesting to find out about the research areas of the different groups but also how this research is underpinned by the facilities at the Institute and the specialist techniques that are used.” – Eleanor Smith, Lampton School

An insight into Crossrail

Rose Russell, winner of the Technician in STEM Subjects ENTHUSE Award, discusses her time with Crossrail and, in particular, her exciting visit 30 metres below ground to see railway tunnels being built and taking shape.

“[STEM Insight] inspired me to have the confidence to go beyond my own expectations, and achieve results which, quite frankly, have astounded me.”

Take a look at QinetiQ’s video

Why not hear about a placement straight from the teacher’s mouth? QinetiQ put together a fantastic video that shows you everything the teachers on their placement experienced. From business development and corporate responsibility to wind tunnels and space laboratories, the teachers had a whirlwind of a time!

“I chose to visit QinetiQ this week to understand the career pathways that QinetiQ offer, so that we can skill our students with the knowledge when the apply of how to sell themselves” Laura Wakefield

An eye opener into the world of STEM careers

At Syngenta, Mrs Manning spent a week discovering electron microscopes, learning how to pollinate wheat to breed more productive plants and getting hands-on experience in the labs as well as seeing the wide range of robots and machinery used in the company.

“As a result of my placement, I am now much better informed about what it is to be a scientist, which will help me develop careers guidance activities for my students who might be considering STEM careers.”

Transforming careers education with Tomorrow’s Engineers

A spin-off from our usual STEM Insight programme, Marie Jobson spent five days with five employers which has helped her make contacts and understand the inner workings of STEM organisations.

“The tours of each business were fantastic and it was excellent to speak to as many employees as possible about their own routes into the organisation… The investment from all companies in creating a programme of activities, tours and staff to talk to was incredibly valuable…”
