Summer 2022 will see several great CPD opportunities for teachers of post-16 science. Whether your interest is in developing your subject knowledge, preparing to teach new qualifications, or being inspired by the latest developments in cutting edge science, we have a comprehensive range of opportunities available to you. Many of these opportunities are bursary funded and attract generous teacher release payments which can help towards the costs associated with attending CPD. Please check the website via the links provided below for further details.
Cutting edge science
Cutting Edge Science: genomics enables teachers to understand the latest developments at the cutting edge of genomics research and bring this back to the classroom. Taking place at the Wellcome Genome Campus, you will experience a tour of the world's foremost facility in genomics research and computational biology. You will hear from lead scientists about their research (including a tour of stem cell research laboratories), participate in hands-on practical activities, and receive expert guidance on how to link genomics research to the curriculum.
Cutting Edge Science: earth observation, developed in collaboration with the National Space Academy, will develop your understanding of Earth Observation Science and ways in which you can bring this to the physics classroom. It will include hands-on activities that students can use to investigate the physics of the EM spectrum, gases and thermal transfer that will unlock understanding of the science of Earth Observation while focusing on developing key practical skills. You will also hear from lead scientists about their role in research and the latest developments in this field
T Level Science (and Healthcare Science and Health)
T Level First Teach Event (health & science) - STEM Learning & NCFE Collaboration is aimed at staff delivering the T Levels in health, science & healthcare science starting in September 2022. The purpose of this event is to gain an understanding of effective teaching practice and facilitate networking between providers delivering the T levels. As part of this event, NCFE and STEM Learning will share teaching and learning resources to support you in your delivery.
T Level science: an introduction to NCFE and STEM Learning support will help you discover the support available for teaching the new T Level science qualification. In this interactive session, you’ll discover the various support that is available, explore resource collections, discuss common challenges/solutions with colleagues and prepare for delivery.
New to teaching T Level science is a course suitable for both teachers and faculty leaders and provides both an overview of the qualification and support to help you prepare your students for learning. The course focuses on key considerations for delivery such as understanding labour market information, developing workplace skills and behaviours, and adding context to the curriculum. There is also consideration of the pedagogical approaches and resources that will be required in delivering the technical qualification.
Subject knowledge enhancement
T Level science subject knowledge enhancement: chemistry is perfect for teaching outside of your specialism or if you are looking to improve your chemistry subject knowledge for delivery of T Level science? This course will help you to prepare for teaching T Level science and will focus on the subject knowledge needed to teach the chemistry content of the core component.
T Level science subject knowledge enhancement: physics will provide insight into some teaching approaches and resources that can be used to deliver the topics and is suitable for any teachers that are planning to teach T Level Science in schools or colleges. It would be particularly suitable for non-specialists in this area and/or newly/recently qualified teachers.
Post-16 physics subject knowledge enhancement: electricity will help you develop the background subject knowledge required to help plan and teach physics for key stage 5. This course will help you to prepare for teaching the topic of electricity and will focus on the subject knowledge needed to teach the content. Primarily aimed at A-Level, this course may also be useful in supporting these topic areas within other Level 3 science qualifications.
Post-16 biology subject knowledge enhancement: cells, tissues, cellular exchange and the cell cycle is perfect for those teaching outside of their specialism or looking to improve your subject knowledge for delivery of A level biology (or biology components of Level 3 BTEC Applied science or T Level science)? This course will help you to prepare for teaching this topic and will focus on the subject knowledge needed to teach the content (cells, tissues, exchange, and the cell cycle).
