Mangorolla CIC

I'm a Scientist is a student-led activity connecting students with a range of scientists from different specialisms and backgrounds.

Students can:

  • Read the profiles of scientists working in different careers
  • Chat with scientists in 40-minute, energetic, text-based online Chats
  • Ask in depth follow-up questions
  • Vote for their favourite scientist to win £500.

It's a moderatored, flexible activitiy, that is safe, secure and easy to use. It's suitable for ages 10-18.

Expected outcomes

Taking part gives students the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge across the curriculum.

Studies show that engaging with the curriculum over multiple interventions is shown to increase students' aspirations, as well as increase the chance of them meeting multiple outcomes at a deeper level.

By the end of the activity, students will be able to do one or more of these outcomes:

  • Show research skills in reading scientist profiles to construct questions which involve higher order thinking
  • Recall new scientific content relevant to their current school topics
  • Name at least two STEM related careers
  • Engage in conversations with scientists in an appropriate manner
  • Use the internet safely by demonstrating appropriate behaviour
  • Use critical thinking to make an informed voting decision

I'm a Scientist is personally relevant to students and their lives, elicits and values students' questions and experiences, and provides support for building some of hte dimensions of science capital.
