Trigonometric Ratios of Any Angle
The objectives of this PowerPoint are for students to:
- understand what is meant by: circular functions; quadrants; positive angles; negative angles.
- recall the main characteristics of the graphs of y = sin x, y = cos x and y = tan x.
- consider the main trigonometric ratios in all 4 quadrants.
- to introduce and use the CAST diagram for solving simple trig.
- ratio problems. solve simple trigonometric ratio problems graphically.
- solve simple trigonometric ratio problems by identifying a quicker method.
The initial slides explain how positive and negative angles are measured, the labels given to each of the four quadrants, what a circular function is and what the graphs of y=sin x, y=cos x and y=tan x look like. The following slides explain, in detail, the values of θ in the range 0o to 360o which satisfy equations such as sin θ = sin 50o using both the use of a circle and using the graph. The final activity requires students to solve five similar equations.
