Scrummy Structures (Key Stage Two)

This resource, aimed at Key Stage Two, looks at the how the properties of a material lead to it being used for a particular purpose. The lesson plan provides links to the topics of everyday materials and their uses, forces and design and technology. Children are asked to make observations of lifeboats thinking about how they are designed and built to withstand the force of water pushing up against the hull. A challenge is then set to design and build a beam or bridge that is long, strong and light using crackers, wafers, paperclips and bridge supports. This resource, which has been produced by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), includes background information about various types of composite structures – where layers of materials are used to make something strong but light.
