Water, Water, Everywhere? (11-14)
This resource, from Siemens UK, encourages students to appreciate the importance of clean water and the problems that may arise in the absence of it. Students consider soluble and insoluble pollutants and methods of filtration. They then explore contamination by microorganisms, water-borne diseases and the advantages and disadvantages of water purification systems. Finally, the film clip 'Thirsty Strawberries' provides a different context and the compares the demand for water in one of the most prosperous areas (Southern California) with that seen previously in Africa. So that students can compare and contrast the two situations with regard to the technical challenge.
