Junior Maths Topics

These resources from Shropshire Centre for Mathematics Education have been developed by topic to be used as required throughout the academic year. Each section lists the previous knowledge required by students to make the work relevant, as well as highlighting the skills which will be developed. Individual activities provide notes which specify apparatus, extension opportunities and guidance for teachers.

Junior Maths Topics Year 3

Digits - extends understanding of the concept of a 'digit', as opposed to a number.
Shapes and patterns - explores different aspects of pattern and 'new' shapes that can be produced by combining two or more shapes.
Routes - focuses on the language associated with distance and directions which are applied to a "real life" situation.
Squares - uses the central idea of a square in a range of mathematical contexts and develops some understanding of the interdependence of different areas of mathematics.
Shape up - identification of properties of shapes and of classifying them, including a tree sort diagram.
Pattern search - investigate situations, look for patterns and identify relationships.

Junior Maths Topics Year 4

Surrounds - surrounding a central shape by repeatedly applying a rule.
Bits and pieces - extends understanding of halves and quarters.
Growth - enlarging shapes from a starting point.
How much bigger - explores area and perimeter relationships.
Which way now - giving directions using the conventions of LOGO in its graphics form.
Chance it - introduces the scale of likelihood that runs from certainty to impossibility.

Junior maths Topics Year 5

Puzzle it out - develops logical thinking and multiplication skills.
Tiling - tessellating designs by translation, rotation and reflection.
Box it - extends knowledge of nets, volume and rounding.
Angle - increased accuracy when measuring with a protractor and drawing 2D shapes
Transformers - aspects of area; conservation, relationship with perimeter and calculation.
100 square investigation - an accessible mathematical idea to explore and develop coursework skills.

Junior Maths Topics Year 6

Plot it - coordinates in four quadrants.
Courseworks - two extended investigations, with anticipated outcomes, involving shapes and number.
Not 1 - topic on fractions and decimals, designed for all levels of ability.
Round and round - a mixture of experiences related to circles, turning and rotation.
Growing structures - numerical relationships that can be represented algebraically.
Probability coursework - students generate data which is recorded, tabulated, analysed and interpreted.
